Mirror Me
Aim: Enhancing self-awareness, self-compassion and loving-kindness toward ourselves by deepening connection with our alter ego embedded in classical music.
Level: 2
Duration: 1-5 min
Hello from the other side.
Instructions:
- Prepare a short piece of classical music (around 3 minutes) and headphones.
- Sit comfortably, relax your muscles, put the headphones up, close your eyes and listen to the music. Don't overthink, just sink in the melody. This is the preparation phase before facing yourself in the mirror.
- Then slowly get up, stretch yourself and go to the bathroom or any other place that has a mirror. You can continue to have your headphones on with the music or just leave it.
- Now look at yourself as another person, your alter ego, deep into the eyes. Greet yourself by your name or nickname (can be aloud but it's enough to do it in your head). Ask how you are and appreciate one thing you've done today (can be simple things like waking up early, completing some tasks, eating healthy snacks, make important phone calls). Your alter ego in the mirror can answer but it's not necessary. It's enough that you will recognize and appreciate your actions.
- You may use positive affirmations (e.g. I am enough, I try my best, I am creative). If you feel like it, you might have a longer conversation with yourself considering some choices during the day or making plans for the evening. All the time looking into your own eyes. The exercise might feel awkward, but can enhance a deep connection with ourselves.
Afterwards, get back to the normal flow of the day. If you need de-rolling from the alter-ego, then shake your whole body and dust yourself off.
Advice:
It might be beneficial to use classical music for this exercise as it can broaden our horizons, get us out of our comfort zone, and help deepen our connection with ourselves. But you can use any kind of music that touches your soul.
