Focus Pocus
Aim: Stress relief, grounding.
Level: 2
Duration: 1-5 min
To ground yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress.
Instructions:
If you are feeling stressed, follow the next steps to help redirect your thoughts and calm down:
- Take an object, any object you like and hold it in your hands.
- Take a few deep breaths and focus completely on the object you are holding. If any thought comes up, redirect your attention to the object.
- Notice its texture, its weight in your hands, and how much space it takes. Is it cold? Is it warm? What sound does it make? Notice every detail, every imperfection. Notice its colour. Is it smooth or is it bumpy? Does it sparkle? Is it fragile?
- Slowly remove your focus from the object, and take a few deep breaths. Redirect your attention to your working space.
- How are you feeling now? Take note of anything you find important.
Advice:
Allow yourself to fully immerse into the experience and take as much time as you need. If your environment is too distracting, try to find a quiet place to do the exercise. You could also put some calming music of your choice in the background.
Extra:
Grounding is a powerful tool to alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety, an easy way to self-soothing. It helps by keeping you present and helps redirect your thoughts from a stressor to your environment. It allows you to step away from negative thoughts and refocus your attention on the here and now.
