A Pencil to Be Heard
Aim: To reduce anxiety and improve performance in public speaking.
Level: 2
Duration: 10-15 min
This acting technique will help you overcome the fear of speaking out loud.
Instructions:
- Put a pencil into your mouth and hold it between your teeth.
- Read out loud for 2-3 minutes a written text of your choice, putting effort into trying to make your reading as clear as possible.
- When you’re done, remove the pencil from your mouth and rest for 1-2 minutes. Gently massage your face muscles, if needed, and remember what you felt while reading, focusing on any specific struggle that may have appeared.
- Now read out loud the same text without the pencil in your mouth. Try to put the same effort as done earlier, and to pay attention to the differences you may notice.
- Close with relaxing breathing exercises (e.g., Bumblebee Breath)
Advice:
You’re recommended to perform this activity in a place where you feel comfortable and safe.
After a few sittings and as soon as you feel comfortable, you can shift from reading a written text to improvised speech.
The activity can be also made in pairs, with a “speaking buddy” and a “listening buddy” switching roles and giving each other feedback.
The pencil can be replaced with a straw or other disposable/washable items of similar texture and shape.
